Groundwater Recharge Tech to End Water Woes

Bracing itself to meet the rising demand for potable water during summers, the Delhi Government has started testing new technology tagged “Soil Bed Water Harvesting”.
On Wednesday, the Delhi Government’s Irrigation and Flood Control Departments tested this new technology near Chilla Sewage Treatment Plant, Mayur Vihar.
After treating sewerage water, this technology will percolate treated water into soil and help to increase ground water table result in no drinking water scarcity in Delhi in near future.
It is pertinent to mention here that, Delhi face water scarcity situation in every summer situation.
Moreover, Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) also mentioned in its report that ground water level is going down and many areas in south Delhi, have already been marked as dark zone in terms of ground water levels.
Presently, Delhi is getting over, 1050 cusecs of water from Haryana. According to Government database, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) supplies 900 Million Gallon of water per Day (MGD) against the demand of 1100MGD.
There are 24 lakh water connections in Delhi while 47 per cent of water is leak and theft.  200 MGD of water extracts from borewells by private players.
Delhi gets its water from Munak canal and 80 MGD water goes into Wazirabad pond, 220 MGD in Haiderpur, 20 MGD in Bawana, 40 MGD in Nangloi and 40 MGD in Dawarka. It gets 60 per cent (540MGD) of water from Yamuna River.
Delhi is highly reliable on Haryana to meet everyday water demand in Capital. According to DJB —Haryana has to supply 450 cusecs of potable water daily to Wazirabad barrage for supply as per its 1996 order.
It may be recalled Delhi Government had petitioned Supreme Court in March of this year and accused Haryana of not honouring the 1996 apex court’s directives.
DJB had mentioned that due to drop in the level of Yamuna, its water treatment plants have either stopped functioning or were operating below capacity.
